Loving Vincent

Information

Director: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman
Country/Year: Poland, United Kingdom, 2017
Duration: 95’

The story of Vincent van Gogh is shown through the point of view of his immediate surroundings, which gives “Loving Vincent” a narrative structure resembling such classics as “Rashomon” or “Citizen Kane”. The Polish-British co-production is more stunning however for its visual aspect. This Oscar nominated animation, granted the European Film Award in 2017, is the first feature film made using the technique of oil painted animation. The extent of the project is best shown through numbers – after the initial stage of shooting with actors, a group of 125 painters, frame by frame, hand painted all of the shots, creating over 65 thousand paintings. It’s what made Van Gogh’s works come to life. What was challenging for the artists was adjusting the different sizes of figures in portraits to one cinematic format. The brilliant reproductions of the Dutch masters’ paintings, fitted for another medium – film – also prove the timelessness of his compositions.
